Statement by the European Economic and Trade Office on the passing of the ’Green House Gases Reduction and Management Act’ by the Legislative Yuan
"The European Economic and Trade Office (EETO) welcomes the Greenhouse Gas Reduction and Management Act that was passed today in the Legislative Yuan. This legislation is a significant milestone in increasing Taiwan’s capacity to address climate change in the future.
2015 is a crucial year in the effort to tackle climate change as the international community prepares for a new global climate deal at a United Nations meeting in Paris in December. On 6 March this year the EU and its member states submitted their proposed contributions to the agreement committing to a legally binding target of at least a 40 percent domestic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. Before this, the EU was already committed to the target of 80% reduction by 2050 compared to 1990 levels.
Climate change requires all global actors to join force. The EETO welcomes this important step forward in Taiwan and the EU will remain ready to share best practice to address one of the defining challenges of our generation."
